Women's shelters are an important place of refuge: According to statistics, every third woman in Germany suffers violence in her partnership and almost every second day a woman dies at the hands of her (ex-)partner. Why does Germany do so little for women in need?

The ZDFzoom documentary "Women's Shelters in Need" takes a look behind the facades of permanently overcrowded women's shelters. Why do so many women in an emergency situation have to be turned away? In search of answers, ZDFzoom reporter Vanessa Schlesier meets women's shelter residents and staff, violence experts and politicians.
